BMW Issues Two Recalls

BMW Recalls 2017

Two new recalls have surfaced, this time BMW has issued warnings of under the hood fires due to a faulty valve and faulty wiring. The risk of fires is apparently low, but this could potentially be a serious problem, especially because these fires can happen even if your car is off. There have been numerous recalls over the last few years. Make sure to check if your vehicle is involved in any recalls.

UNHTSA BMW Recall Alert

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has found that the heater for the positive crankcase ventilation valve can overheat, causing the valve to then melt. This increases the risk of a fire, even when the car is not in use. The heater is made to prevent the valve from freezing in cold temperatures. The overheating seems to be happening due to corrosion and irregularities in manufacturing. So far, no injuries have been reported. This is the largest of the two BMW recalls and involves 740,000 cars and covers the following vehicles:

  • 328i, 328xi, 328i xDrive, 525i, 525xi, 528i, 528xi, 530i, 530xi, X3 3.0si, X3 xDrive30i, X5 xDrive30i, Z4 3.0i, Z4 3.0si, Z4 sDrive30i from 2007-2011
  • 128i from 2008-2011

The second recall has to do with the wiring of the heating and air conditioning systems. These can overheat and cause the connectors to melt, again increasing the risk of a fire even when the vehicle is not in use. The wiring also seems to be subject to corrosion, causing the fires to start. There have been four injuries reported due to this. This recall covers about 673,000 vehicles, including:

  • 323i, 325i, 325xi, 328i, 328xi, 330i, 330xi, 335i, 335xi, M3 from 2006-2011
  • 328i xDrive, 335i xDrive, 335i xDrive, 335is from 2007-2011
  • 335d from 2009-2011

Some vehicles are affected by both BMW recalls. The dealers have stated that they will be replacing the heater, the wires, and the connectors on the affected vehicles. This recall is totaling about 1.4 million vehicles on the road. In May, ABC-owned stations began conducting an investigation which leads them to find more than 40 cases of BMWs that were parked and had their car catch on fire when it was not in use. Some of those cars were turned off for hours, some of them for days. One man, Bill Macko, lost his car and his home when his vehicle caught fire inside of his garage. Replacement parts will begin on December 18th.

Please Take Precaution!

We urge you to take precautions until the parts can be replaced. Do not park your vehicle in your garage or too close to your home at night or during the day, as one woman had her BMW spontaneously catch fire in the middle of the day, in her driveway. Find out if your car has been affected and contact your local dealership to see what can be done now and to put your name on the list for replacement parts. Failure to do so can result in severe injuries to ones self or others. Vehicle recalls, especially in regards to safety, should be acknowledged and rectified as quickly as possible. The quicker these issues are addressed the safer everybody on the road is. Always, stay cautious, stay aware, and stay informed on the current news regarding your vehicle.
