This might not come as a huge surprise to those who have followed the news lately, but it’s still disheartening to hear.
Over the last year alone, we’ve seen countless examples of car companies falling short when it comes to building reliable vehicles.
Some of these shortcomings have been more obvious than others; many automakers continue to operate in blissful denial over how big of an issue their build quality issues are.
Others haven’t realized quite how bad things have become yet.
Either way, every brand seems to be on the same page when it comes to acknowledging that they need to do better moving forward.
A reliable car shouldn’t just perform well at its intended task, but should also be able to handle challenging situations without breaking down.
Fortunately for Kia and Hyundai owners, their cars generally fit that bill quite well.
Both companies earned a reliability rating higher than 500 points across all model lines in the latest Vehicle Dependability Study from JD Power and Associates (VDS).
In fact, both brands ranked in the top 20 for dependability overall – which is no small feat for such independent-minded manufacturers!

KIA and Hyundai Reliability Ratings Are Currently at an All-Time High
Hyundai’s reliability has seen a significant increase since 2016.
In the last three years, the South Korean brand has seen its ranking climb from a score of 434 to 547.
That’s an impressive jump that could be attributed to a number of reasons – but one that would be particularly beneficial is the recent partnership with Apple.
The Cupertino company recently shifted the responsibility for managing its worldwide car fleet from Mercedes-Benz to Hyundai, which is likely why these changes have had such a noticeable impact on Hyundai’s score.
This change will certainly help bolster Hyundai’s position in JD Power’s next Vehicle Dependability Study, which should be out later this year.
In 2016, Kia ranked as the 11th most reliable car model in America with a score of 536 points.
Since then, however, Kia has seen its ranking plummet to 17th in 2017 – which means it has seen decreased dependability by more than 100 points!
But don’t worry; it looks like things are seriously turning around for the Korean brands.

The latest Vehicle Dependability Study by JD Power and Associates (VDS) has revealed that of the 24 major brands included in the study, 14 received a score lower than 500 points.
However, Kia and Hyundai are two of the more reliable car brands on the road.
As of now, there is no indication as to why these two cars are so durable when it comes to dependability.
But hopefully, these companies will be able to share their secrets with other automakers in order to improve on this issue moving forward.
Included in Kia’s score was a top 20 ranking for overall dependability and a score of 593 for dependability in the category of owner satisfaction.
In particular, consumers noted that Kia cars have outstanding handling under challenging conditions and strong brakes during panic stops.
In addition to its top 20 ranking for overall dependability, Hyundai achieved a score of 597 across all model lines – which is impressive considering most models from all brands scored below 500 points!
